It seems to me that Yao Ming significantly promoted basketball in China. Personally, I don't like him (he never has much to say and he appears in too many commercials). Basketball is a very popular sport in China now. Famous clothing brands produce entire collections of basketball outfits, including shoes and balls, even if someone doesn't play, they still follow fashion.
