Short videos from the Middle Kingdom

A new section on my website. Why not use a video camera? Photographs do not always capture the full atmosphere of a situation or an event. Motion and animation are just as important. I decided to share a few videos that I created myself. I hope they will help you get even closer to discovering the Middle Kingdom.

Travelling by High-Speed Train

China's high-speed rail network is truly impressive. In many cases, travelling by train is even better than flying because air travel involves check-in, security procedures, and flight delays of two or three hours are quite common. High-speed trains are punctual and operate at speeds of 300-350 km/h (186-217 mph). In just four hours you can travel from Guangdong Province to Hunan Province, for example from Shenzhen to Changsha. The same journey by a conventional train used to take 12-14 hours!

The Way to School

Filmed in 2012 in Yueyang, Hunan Province. As you can see, getting to school can be quite a challenge. In China, pedestrian crossings often mean very little, and children weave between moving cars. In the end they win this "road battle" simply by stepping onto the street together as a large group. Would you like your child to cross the road this way on the way to school? See for yourself... Funny Tai Chi

Filmed in 2004 in a park in Shenzhen. My presence interrupted the Tai Chi practice a little, but as you can see, a bit of fun and laughter certainly did not hurt anyone's fitness. One of the girls decided to demonstrate a more dynamic and spectacular version of Tai Chi, quickly moving into Kung Fu.

Drum Performance

This is how people in my neighbourhood like to relax—they enjoy playing the drums together. Seriously though, it is a fascinating and very loud performance. At the moment these are only rehearsals. The main show will probably take place during the Mid-Autumn Festival (late September) or China's National Day (October 1st).

Just Go Ahead!

A crazy pedestrian crossing where traffic lights seem to be ignored by everyone. A green light for pedestrians also means a green light for cars approaching from both the left and the right. The video has been sped up five times.

Metro Station

Hundreds of people waiting for the metro. Nothing unusual... until you notice that people board and leave the train at exactly the same time. Nobody gives way to anyone. It doesn't matter whether it's a pregnant woman, an elderly passenger, or someone with limited mobility. Everyone has to fight their way into and out of the train.
